Default Ringtone

Has Apple not yet corrected the software to allow changes to the Default Ringtone? I have several ringtones, and when I assign one of them vis the Settings, it shows the new name of the ringtone but maintains the standard Apple ringtone (iPhone 8 running IOS 12.3.1).

iPhone 8, iOS 12

Thanks for all the help, ChrisJ4203 - problem has been solved. It must have been some kind of translation glitch as conversions done by the "ease..." program I used AND also by iTunes "Convert"/"Create AAC Version" weren't doing the job. Downloaded one called "EasyRingtones" and it worked like gangbusters to convert the .mp3 files to m4r form, and also found a website to download m4r files directly. For some strange reason, iTunes accepted both of those into my iPhone's "Tones" folder and they all work great. Yes, even the Default ringtone was changed with them! Happy camper again! Wouldn't have been so persistent without your help, so do appreciate it. I'm sure I will eventually find another problem to tax the wits of the Apple Community wizards, so stay tuned (pun intended!). Many thanks.

Are you able to change the default ringtone to another one of the Apple installed ringtones? Those timings are good, but I agree, it is an issue with your device. Have you tried creating a current backup of the device, then restore the device to factory and setup as new, without using a backup? Then try just syncing tones to the device and test. If it works then, we have to assume there is corrupt data in your backup. How you proceed from there is up to you. Is there data in your backup that you cannot do without?

Thanks for the quick response, ChrisJ4203. I did attach a custom ringtone to my text messages, but I want to replace the main/default ringtone with one of the custom ringtones, and that works/doesn't work as I outlined above (name appears but the ring doesn't change). I've also been unable to bring any new .m4r ringtone files into my iPhone 8 - tried all methods mentioned on the net via iTunes and easeUSmobimover app, but lets just stick to the default ringtone question. Have you been able to change that on your iPhone XS?

I can see that I wasn't very clear in my explanation. Yes, I know where the Sounds & Haptics settings are, and I have set the default ringtone with one of the OS-supplied ringtones. It is the CUSTOM ringtones (ones I have downloaded from the internet and/or ones I have created using iTunes and editing a song, cropping it, and then changing the type to .m4r) that I can't set as the default. They are obviously proper ringtones since I can set them for the other warnings and reminders but NOT as the default main ringtone.

10, 14, 18, 26, 29 seconds. I've tried several with the same result. Starting to think it is just a major anomaly with my personal phone! If it works for you, then there must be a hidden glitch in my phone. Will keep experimenting with different ones, looking for a breakthrough. Thanks for the confirmation that yours works okay so I will keep the faith that I can "break the code" one of these days!

If you are adding a custom ringtone to a specific contact, that ringtone is the one that you should head when that contact calls. If that is not working, it needs to be troubleshot. Is this the error that you are experiencing? There is no software error that I am aware of. I have a number of custom ringtones set for individual members of my family that work quite well on my iPhone XS. As well as custom text tones.
