Hi Kdc7703,
It sounds like you're having trouble with Messages, and I want to help.
The behavior you're describing is not consistent with Family Sharing.
Instead, it sounds like you and your son are using the same Apple ID on both devices.
On each device, go to Settings > [your_name]. Is the same name and email listed at the top on both devices?
If not, check in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
Is the same Apple ID shown here on both devices?
If you're seeing the same ID in one or both places, I recommend creating a separate Apple ID for one of you:
How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support
Let me know if that helps.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
