Safari defaults to yahoo search engine even though its google on preference and always has been. No settings were changed but cannot get rid of yahoo as default search engine

You have adware/malware installed. Use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. It may be necessary to run more than one scan. After scanning a couple of times, restart the computer and test.
