My ethernet cable says "cable unplugged" and won't register the cable. Can you help please me?

I am on a Macbook early 2015 and running macOS Mojave. I followed directions about putting in my IP address (as you can see in the screenshot below) and restarting, but that did not work.

I followed directions about copying and pasting something into Terminal in case my mac was included in the laptops that Apple the ethernet connection, but that did not work.

I am not super tech savvy, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I am trying to connect for my business with video and creating streams so love your assistance. Thanks, in advance, for your time.

MacBook, macOS 10.14

Hi jphillippi21!

I understand that the ethernet connection isn’t working on your Mac, and I'm happy to help. To help isolate this issue further, please test to see if it occurs in safe mode and in a new user account:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

You can also try using a different ethernet cable to rule out an issue with the cable.

Cheers!

FWIW. The IP address in the image does not appear to be valid. Your Mac is configured to get its IP address from a DHCP server. That server should have been providing it with a local IP address that would start with either: 10, 172, or 192. Also if the DHCP server was working properly, the DNS Server address would not be the same as the IP address. Furthermore, there are no Subnet Mask or Router addresses listed. This would lead me to believe that the communication between the Mac and the DHCP server is either incorrect or there is an issue with the server. Most likely, this server is your local network router.

chris_g1's recommendation to boot up your Mac in Safe Mode, may have just done the trick.

Chris,

Thank you so so so much! After following the safe mode process, the ethernet cable worked in safe mode, and then now it is working in normal mode as well! Don't completely understand what caused it to start working now but it is fixed and I greatly appreciate your assistance. Thanks again for taking some of your time to help me fix this. I hope you have a fantastic weekend wherever in the world you are located.

Cheers,

Joey
