Why can’t Siri read messages on Apple Watch?

Do you have some type of headphones connected? I've not tried to get Siri to read a message on the Watch, but it would need an output device for you to hear them, such as speaker, or headphones.
I know the watch has a speaker, but I've never had a verbal response from Siri, even though the voice turned on. Given your response, I tested it tonight with something that could illicit a verbal response and got it. My apologies. If it is anything like what people have said about CarPlay, it may require that you have preview turned on, even for lock screen, in Messages for Siri to read them. Something worth a try.
The Apple Watch has a speaker which Siri uses, but can't read messages.
The Watch doesn't have that capability. She tells me that when I ask.
