Can you use iTunes to change their type from audiobook to "Music" or "Podcast" and then sync them to your Apple Watch so that you can play your audiobooks as either Music or a Podcast. After all, an audiobook, music and podcasts are just sound files.

iTunes on your Mac or PC -> select the audiobook -> Get Info (Command-i) -> Option tab -> Media Kind (change this to a file format that is available on your Apple Watch).

This is just a suggestion that may or may not work.

I use it all the time to convert podcasts to music so I can put them into a playlist that I play in my car. The podcasts just play from one to the next in the order I specify. So I figure if I can do this for Podcasts, and because the "Media Kind" pop-up list "Audiobook" as a choice, I figure this will work for you to change from Audiobook to another "Media Kind" that you can play on your Apple Watch.
