Archiving Photos!

Like many people I have amassed a large number of photographs & videos spread across several devices since becoming an apple use in 2014. My wife has treated me to a new iPad Air for my 40th and I was wondering if there is a way to save all all of my photos to one location so I don’t lose any when I wipe my current iPad, and I want to start going through them and organising them. I also have a couple of different iPhones which I have kept as they still have photos on. I’m not that familiar with how the iCloud works and as far as I understand when you wipe a device you delete the images from the iCloud whereas I want to keep them all. I don’t own a Mac or pc which is why I’m not just downloading them.

any advice would be appreciated

If you have iCloud Photos turned on in a device and you delete a photo from that device, it deletes from iCloud and from all other devices where iCloud Photos is turned on. However, if you erase the device as described in the following, it does not erase anything from iCloud or from any other device: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If all of your devices are signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID and if you turn on iCloud Photos on all of them, they will merge in iCloud and on the devices. Note that iCloud Photos is only available with iOS 8.3 or later on iOS devices.

Thank you. I didn’t want to risk losing photos and haven’t owned a computer since getting an iPad so had no other way to pull images off. I been a professional photographer for 20 plus years but worked on windows systems, and never really getting up to speed with how everything works with apple other than the basics but as my works kit is now apple I’m going to use it more at home too.

Cheers

wayne.
