Have you enabled Do Not Disturb While Driving?
That's because the audio from your phone is being routed to the head unit which supports A2DP audio streaming. If you're not listening to the bluetooth audio source on the stereo, you won't hear the notifications.
Realistically, you should be using Do Not Disturb while Driving to silence such alerts anyway so you don't kill someone trying to check your text messages when you should be paying attention to the road.

we stopped at Verizon store while traveling and they could not help
either
i have only had this XR two weeks
I think I will have to contact apple support
the texts come through but there is no audio so if I don’t check phone periodically as we were traveling I had no idea any one had texted me
Thanks for your advice but I wasn’t driving I was the passenger and needed to be connected to Bluetooth for google maps
