Question regarding iPod Nano 7th Generation and Apple Music syncing

When I go to sync my iPod Nano 7th Gen, there is no option to sync any of my Apple Music songs. From this, I understand it to be that I "have" to purchase my music when I can already have it downloaded on my device. Is this a normal thing, or is it not?

You can sync iTunes Store purchases, or music bought from other sources and/or copied from CDs, to the Nano, but you cannot add Apple Music songs to it
