just need to activate my watch

If I were to buy myself an inexpensive IPhone to use my IWatch, do I need to sign any contract from phone carriers to open up my watch. I do not need the phone, just the watch.

I already have a phone.

Just need the watch for steps. Fitbit is a joke.
