Find my phone when phone is switched off

So Find My Phone says it will show last known location when battery is critical low and phone has ‘died’. Does anyone know why it won’t give last known location if phone is actively switched off? Or how this can be traced? TIA

If the device is turned off or not connected to the Internet, then no information would be available.

If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen

If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only when it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying numbers. Neither Apple nor anyone else can find your device. You cannot recover your loss unless you ensure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.

If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

Because it would not have sent the location, like the first action you described does. If the phone had been with an active internet connection before it was turned off, it is possible its location would have been shown, but if it no longer has power, and turning it off is different than battery going dead and the phone automatically sending information before it dies, then you will not see a location. The phone can't send a location when it is powered off, and it does not know to send one when someone powers off the phone.
