moving iPhone backup to external drive

Why should I not move my iPhone backup from my Mac to my external hard drive? I read on the apple website I should never do this, I'd like to know why and if there will be any issues if I do this. I need more space on my Mac.

Switching from computer backup of iPhone to iCloud backup of iPhone I need to preserve some space on my hard drive and am currently backing up my iPhone to my computer. Backing up my iPhone & iPad to my PC How can I tell my PC to direct the iPhone backup onto an external storage system? When I try the backup process, it automatically backs up everything onto the C: drive which has limited space. Anyone?
