iPhone 3GS goes straight to voice mail

My iPhone 3GS goes straight to voice mail without ringing. Reception in my area ok. I have been turning phone off at night and shutting down and restarting only works for awhile. (previous suggestions.) Any thoughts?

Is your iPhone new? If not, is this a recent problem that wasn't a problem previously?

Are you in a 3G network area?

Unless you are connected to an available wi-fi network or AT&T's 3G network when actively accessing the internet when a call is received, the call will go straight to voicemail without the phone ringing. A call will go straight to voicemail when accessing the internet via AT&T's EDGE or GPRS network, which can include when new email is being downloaded in the background.

If no change after the standard troubleshooting steps which in order are power the iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset, restoring the iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup, I would visit a local AT&T store to report the problem and to request a new SIM card. There should be no charge for the SIM card replacement and the AT&T store can activate your iPhone with the new SIM card at the store along with testing if this resolves the problem at the store.
