iPhone 8: I cannot use the home button touch more than once in ten times. Must use password, which defeats original purpose. Now I cannot access fingerprint.

So, you are saying that Touch ID is not working correctly? If that is the case, you need to troubleshoot it. Start here, If Touch ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
