Two-factor authorization with foreign SIM card

When I arrive abroad, I switch to a European SIM card that I keep for traveling. I have a new iPhone that Apple will want to authenticate. But Apple will send the code to my US number, in other words to the number linked to the SIM card I’ve taken out. How then do I authorize this device? Do I have to reinsert my US SIM card, authenticate the phone and then reinstall my European SIM card? And how do I get Apple to include the European number as a trusted number? Thanks.

You add a new trusted number at appleid.apple.com, which will need a verification code from your existing trusted device. So, yes, you will need your existing trusted number (on your US SIM) to do that.

If you are authenticated to your phone, you may be able to add a trusted phone number at Settings > [your name] > Passwords & Security > Trusted Phone Numbers > Edit.

You may also be able to get codes at that same location in settings, removing the need for another trusted device.
