can not boot up- getting flashing file icon w/ question mark

unable to go to recovery or utilities. its just flashing a file with a question mark and the apple logo



any help is appreciated

Apple has an extensive and almost all-encompassing support knowledge base, please avail yourself of it by entering keywords in the search box (magnifying glass icon) at the top right of the screen. Had you done so, you'd have found this article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204323 which tells you how to troubleshoot that particular error (it means that your computer cannot find the files necessary to boot MacOS, in other words, they've become corrupted somehow.


You will need to follow the steps in the aforementioned article to troubleshoot - and hopefully fix - your problem.
