Lightning cable only plays one earbud.

My lightning cable that connects my headphones to my phone is not working. Music is only playing from one earbud. It's not the ear buds themselves because when plugged into a device that does not need the cable, like my sister's older iphone that has an audio jack and computer they work absolutely fine. Every time i plug it into the lightning cable only the left ear plays. Do I have to replace it?
