@me.com email address

I recently got married and my current @ me.com email address uses my maiden name. I don't think I can create a new @me.com email address anyway but is there anyway I can change my current email address to reflect my name change without having to log into 2 different accounts?

I googled and it mentions using an alias? At that point I got confused! Am I best to set up a new @icloud.com email address and forward all my old mail there?

What's the easiest solution please?

Thanks

There are some errors in the above post. As your Apple ID is @me.com address you cannot change it.

The actual email address cannot be changed either, but as said you can create an 'email alias' - this is an additional address (not account) which delivers into the inbox alonside the current main @me.com and @icloud.com addresses. You can set this to be the 'From' address when you send emails. However you cannot turn an email alias into an Apple ID. The sentence quoted above refers only to the alternative versions of the main address (@icloud.com, @me.com, and where applicable @mac.com), not to the additional 'email aliases'. It would prevent a lot of confusion if Apple stopped referring to the alternative versions of the primary address as aliases, since 'email aliases' are not the same thing at all.

Using an email alias to give out to people and use as the 'From' address will leave you logging in with the old address but no-one else need see it. The alternative is the hassle of creating a new Apple ID and a new iCloud account to go with it, moving all your data over, setting up forwarding, and noting that you can't transfer iTunes purchases to another account.

Hello, The New Mrs. Mynes,

Congratulations! It’s perfectly understandable that you’d like your emails, now, to reflect your new name. And with Apple mail it’ll be easy to do that.

Should you chose the alias route from the above link — which I’d choose if I were you, as it so very much easier — once your aliases are established, the only consideration you’ll have is being sure to select THAT new particular new email (alias) address, when you’re initiating any email.

Below is an example of what you’ll see in a new email, once you have aliases set up. I happen to have 4 aliases, along with my real one, as shown below. (Please disregard the .mac, as that’s my choice of addresses, vs. .me or .icloud, and I have that option having been an older .mac user.) The only thing you’ll have to be careful of is which is selected, when beginning a new email. I say that because, frequently, I haven’t paid attention, and emails have gone out with the wrong one, confusing friends who knew me by a particular one.

If you’re replying to someone who’s written you, using your alias, Apple mail will keep that same email address, when you hit reply. It’s only on initiating some that you’ll have to pay attention. Hopefully, it’ll become second nature...

Hope this is helpful!

Linda

Hello HMynes2019,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with changing your @me email. Congratulations on your recent nuptials. You are correct, you have a couple of options with your email and Apple ID account. I will be happy to offer some options for you to decide the best route.

1. You can change your Apple ID. Since your account ends in @me, you can change it to a third-party email address, or use an alias. This article will help: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

2. To make your alias: iCloud: Use email aliases in Mail on iCloud.com - Apple Support

I understand it can be a little confusing, but I will try to simplify the process for you.

  • If you made a new third-party email address and are switching everything over, change the Apple (step 1) and add the new third-party email address.

  • If you do not wish to do that, just want to change the name people see, make an alias (step 2), then change the Apple ID (step 1) to the alias you created because "You can only use email addresses that are already aliases with your account."

Thanks and have a wonderful day.
