I’m trying to use the portrait mode. I keep getting a message telling me to have 8ft between me and the subject. I have more than 8ft between me and the subject and the message won’t leave. Does the camera need to be calibrated one something?

Nope. That's what Portrait Mode is for. Try to photograph another human being and you will see that it works so much better. It can sometimes work on objects aswell, but best results are only achieved with human faces. It's called Portrait Mode in the end, so yeah...

Is the message telling you to have at least eight feet, or at most eight feet?
I’ll come up on the subject, then the camera will say; go back further. I’ll keep stepping back and it’ll say: have 8ft between you and the subject. I’ll step back, way further than 8ft but the message won’t leave and I can’t get a blurry background. 🤷🏽♀️ Idk what’s going on.
It's very difficult to know your particular situation.
We don't know if you're taking a selfie, a photo of someone else, or trying to take a photo of something other than a human (do not do this in Portrait Mode). If you're taking a photo of someone else, watch out for obstructions in the photo.

Im taking pics, or trying to take pics of objects. What kind of obstructions do I need to watch out for? When taking pic of orchids, a fish tank, there are no obstructions.

That's the issue!
Portrait mode requires the subject to be human. It cannot be used to take photos of objects. Use another mode.
