Transferring Photos

I would like to transfer my photos from my iPhone 6s (iOS12.4) directly to thumb drive using my MacBookAir (macOS10.14.6). How do I do that without first transferring them to the MacBookAir or iCloud? I have all adapters needed to connect both iPhone and Thumb drive to my Mac.

iPhone 6, iOS 12

With both devices connected to your MBA launch Image Capture and see if you can download from the iPhone directly to the thumb drive. I'd create a folder on the thumb drive first and download to the folder.

If that fails then Smokerz's method would be the next I'd try but with Image Capture instead of Preview.
