I stupidly didn't back up my MacBook Air before apply the 10.13.6 update (from 10.13.5) and for the last hour its just been sitting there with a black screen and all the keys lit up; nothing appears to be happening.
What's the best way to try to recover this without having to re-install the operating system?

I contacted Apple support via chat line. They had me power off the machine, and do an SMC reset by holding shift-option-control-power for 10 seconds.
Then I started the MBA by pressing the power button, and the install completed in a few minutes, without any further problem.

Ok good move, I sure miss the days when we had a nice little Disk Activity LED to let us know if anything was going on or not... my Internet is so slow that it took 48 hours twice to fail twice before it worked the 3rd time. :(
It's not clear to me if he booted the Mac into recovery mode to run these Unix commands, or if he was able to boot the Mac normally or in safe mode and get to the terminal that way.
I had a terrible time upgrading this machine from 10.12 to 10.13, the upgrade hung and I had to do an SW recovery via internet.
Ah, good catch, looks like it was booted normally & used Terminal.
For the future since you've had trouble updating & upgrading, get another external drive & clone a bootable setup...

I wanted to update my post but that doesn't seem possible. Its about a mid 2013 11" iMac with 1.7GHz core i7 processor and 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, not the 13" MAcBook Air.
You only have 10 to 15 minutes to edit a post, & you use the unintuitive v to the right of Reply & Helpful.
It could take hours.
