AppleCare+ coverage for Apple Pencil

I recently purchased an iPad Air, then added AppleCare+ coverage several days later. The email about AppleCare+ that prompted me to buy the coverage indicated that my Apple Pencil would also be covered by the plan. However, I cannot see verification of this on my AppleCare+ plan.

How do I make sure that my Apple Pencil is covered by my AppleCare+ plan? Is coverage under AppleCare+ unavailable for an Apple Pencil purchased through a third party?
