The method to turn off the newer devices has changed. While that side button with turn it on, it will not turn it off. You must use a combination of buttons. The volume down and the side button held together will bring up the Slide to Power off page.
The method that Giulio also provided is a valid method as well. Knowing more than one option is always a good thing.
