Ringer volume turns off when Bluetooth in car connects

I think the phone is supposed to change ringer volume to zero when you hook up to car Bluetooth so ringing comes through on car audio system. The problem for many people has been that when phone disconnects from car Bluetooth it fails to turn ringer volume back to where it was. My iPhone XR was doing this until recently. After IOS 14 update the issue seems to be fixed for me. Apparently that is not the case for everyone.

Same issue here. I am sitting in the truck (2019 Silverado) now, with it running. I can raise the ringer volume on the phone and watch it go back down immediately. Seems that the Bluetooth in the truck takes control of the volume and does not return it to normal after disconnecting.

To correct this you must turn the vehicles volume most of the way up, wow, wow,

why not separate the volume on the phone from the volume of the vehicle, or is that too complicated for the Apple engineers? ? ?

IOS 14 had no effect, my phone in my 2020 F-150 still turns down (not off, just low) and does not automatically come back up. In my wife's 2018 Flex the ringer still goes completely off and does not come back up. We have got into the habit of always turning up the volume on our phones after turning the vehicles off.

I’m presently at IOS 14.4 but I’m thinking it starting working at initial IOS 14 release September 2020.

i should add that right after I disconnect from car Bluetooth the volume indicator is kind of a ghosted low setting but it resets to normal at least when you need it to be normal. Haven’t really studied that since I’m just happy it works correctly now.

This is not only an issue with autos. This happens to me with my Vizio bluetooth speaker. Everytime I turn on my TV and speaker, it connects to my phone and turns down the ringer volume to equal the speaker volume setting. I don't want to remove that speaker from my bluetooth settings since it is the same speaker I use for Pandora.

I noticed comments about how hard this is to test/fix. That should not be the issue since it is not about testing with each platform, it's about seperating volume control from 2 different functions: ringer and bluetooth. Bluetooth volume and ringer volume are completely different functions.

I will write the user story for you Apple:

As a user, I want to control bluetooth volume separately from ringer volume

Acceptance criteria: When bluetooth is activated volume changes do not impact ringer volume

Design: When a bluetooth speaker is connected do not allow ringer volume changes

I reached out again, and Apple doesn’t care. They WILL NOT get it in their thick skulls that this is a widespread problem.

EVERYONE on here needs to go to Apple’s feedback site and report this issue.

Are you saying that when connecting to the car your ringer volume gets automatically turned down, even without a call? And when you get out of the car, the ringer volume is lower than when you got in the car? I've never heard of that behavior before. In and out of my car numerous times a day, and when I get out, my ringer volume is always where I left it when I got in the car. Are you just connecting to Bluetooth, or are you using CarPlay? When you look at the ringer volume on the phone after getting out of the car, it is actually set lower than it was when you got in?

This is also exactly what is happening to me in my ford with iphone 8. As soon as the bluetooth finishes its connection to my phone, the volume display pops up on the phon and the volume is turned down to about 25%. It then stays at that volume when I shut the truck off and leave it. Very frustrating because I have been missing calls and morning alarms because of this.

I am having the same issue. It seems to have started about a month ago. I almost always have my volume for the ringer and speaker set at the highest level. However, as soon as I go into my truck which is a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, it will connect to Bluetooth and once I turn the truck off and leave, my volumes both turn down to zero. I missed four very important phone calls this afternoon with my phone sitting right next to me at my desk because the volume was turned off. Very frustrating.

Having exact same issue. 2019 Chevy Silverado. I have iPhone XS Max with iOS 13 installed. But it was doing it when previous iOS as well. Pain having to remember to turn volume ringer back up every time I get out of my truck.

I began having the same issue with my iPhone 6 with my 2017 Chevy Colorado suddenly back in July. After purchasing a 2019 Colorado, the issue persisted. After recently upgrading to an iPhone 8, I continue to experience this problem. Anytime my phone connects to the vehicle via Bluetooth, the ringer dials down to a barely audible state and remains there even after exiting the vehicle and turning off the ignition. I, too have missed several important calls and text messages.

Mine definitely started after iOS 13. Never did it before. (Therefore it worries me that posts at beginning of this thread are from before iOS 13.

Have tested mine, and it will not do it if just start car, allow Phone to connect, even if let idle 5 minutes, then shut off car.

I have to actually drive car for at least about 10 minutes. And then, when I stop, shut down car, I find the volume is way down from the 90% it started with. Have today tested on 5 short drives...did it every time. For me, volume does not go to 0, it goes to about 10-15%, but still too low to hear ringer.

Have missed many phone calls due to this.

Have not tested the workaround of the side button ringer adjust setting. Guess going to be forced to try that, as can’t adjust ringer back up ever time get out of car.

But don’t like, I have long used the buttons to adjust ringer volume (and to double check where the ringer volume is set).

Apple needs to fix this problem. This is not just about cars. This is about Bluetooth in general. When I use my headset the same thing is happening. It began with the new release of the iOS. The iPhone automatically turns the ringer down and does not turn it back up. I too am missing calls. And if that is an enough, for whatever reason when I put my phone down, and then Collett from another number to find it, it goes straight to voicemail. This must be fixed!!!!
