Using the iPad as a digital whiteboard

I'm looking to buy a macbook and an iPad. My main reason for buying an iPad is that I want to be able to connect the macbook to a projector in a classroom, run a slide show on the macbook and then not only control the slide show, but also be able to write onto the slide show from the iPad. For example if I have a map on the slideshow and I want to circle points of interest, can I do this from the iPad?

Currently, no. 😟 Simple workaround: project the map from your iPad <onto> your classroom's white board. Then circle whatever it is you want to point out by writing on the white board itself. If you don't have white boards in your classroom, tape a piece of white construction paper to the screen in the approximate location where you want to write, and then write on the paper (carefully).

Right now video out implementation on the iPad is extremely limited. It's the feature I most want to see improved with new hardware/software upgrades (much more than a camera).
