How to turn off iMessage on a shared iPad mini

I have an iPad mini that is shared with other members of my family including young children. When I use messages on my iPhone, iMessage appears on the shared iPad and whoever is using it can see the messages. Is there any way to turn off iMessage on the iPad but still allow it on my phone and Apple Watch? I really don’t want everyone having access to my messages. There used to be a button in settings>Messages on the iPad to turn it off but that is no longer there. Am I missing something?

Turning off text message forwarding is one thing, that will take care of SMS messages from Android users, but if you are signed into iMessage on the iPad mini, any iMessages that you receive from other iOS device users on your phone, will still appear on the device. You would have to sign out of iMessages on the iPad Mini in the settings. As long as nobody knows your Apple ID password, they won’t be able to sign into iMessages again on the iPad.
