Black screen / green vertical lines / software running

Hi all,

Got a dreaded black screen on my laptop when I turn it on and it stays that way. When I manually turn the laptop off, the screen turns off. There are visible green lines which change when the screen it turned on and off but stay green and vertical. Picture attached. 2017 MacBook Pro.

Obviously I will be taking it to an Apple retailer to see if they can fix but can anyone help me with an idea of what the issue might be and more importantly, the cost!

It may be your Graphics card or the Display.

Try an SMC reset:

Try resetting NVRAM:

Try starting up in Safe Mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Run Apple Diagnostics

Press and hold the d key on startup:

I'd bring it in and have Apple run a free diagnostic. Their tests are more comprehensive than Apple Diagnostics anyway.

Yeah, it's not the screen, possibly video card or CPU. Did you try the other startup options I provided?

Thanks for your prompt response.

I tried everything there using the power buttons and the keys as I cannot see what’s on the screen. You could tell there was a response by the computer but it unfortunately didn’t make a difference.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your efforts.
