can i limit which dropbox folders take up space on my mac?

My Dropbox is taking up a ton of memory on my mac. Is there a way to limit which folders and files are saved on my computer directly?

You mean Dropbox, the third-party online service, rather than the Drop Box in your Public folder? With Dropbox you have a 'Dropbox' folder on your Mac and anything you place in that will be synced to Dropbox's server. Anything you don't place in that folder won't be synced. You can nominate certain folders on Drobox not to sync and to be online only:

However note that to do this you need Dropbox Plus, not the free version:

https://www.dropbox.com/buy?_tk=plus_last_button

at £9.99 per month (UK), which gets you 2TB of storage.

You can do the same thing with the free version of Google Drive, which gives you 15GB (upgradeable for a subscription).
