"Cannot Restore Backup" from iCloud

My iPhone X won't restore from an iCloud backup after restoring it to factory settings, showing me the error message "Cannot Restore Backup". I've tried the following methods:

  • Factory resetting my iPhone X via the iPhone and restoring to the iCloud backup from the day before, from my iPhone
  • Factory resetting my iPhone X via the iPhone and restoring to older iCloud backups, from my iPhone
  • Factory resetting my iPhone X via the iPhone and restoring to the iCloud backup from the 3 days ago, , from my iPhone
  • Factory resetting my iPhone X via iTunes on my MacBook Pro and restoring to the iCloud backup from the day before, from my iPhone

None of those methods have worked and I'm really out of options. What annoys me the most is that I already tried restoring my iPhone X to "as new" and was thinking that I'll just have to take the time to reinstall all apps, log in everywhere, etc. but then I noticed that all of my Health data was gone! And I want it back! My Health data has always been set to sync with iCloud and when I check my iCloud storage, I see that Health data is taking up 30MB, so it is there!

Apple has no clue whatsoever on how to solve this problem and neither do I. I hoped to find a solution to this problem but I haven't found any helpful information online.

After multiple talks with Apple engineers they did a fix on my account or backup and the issue has now been resolved.

I suggest anyone having this issue to first try the normal troubleshooting steps:

I have learned that it's always better to do an iTunes backup as well, and that's what I advise anyone should do every week or 2.

Get help restoring from an iCloud backup

First time restoring from an iCloud backup? You can find detailed instructions here.

You'll want to make sure that you stay connected to Wi-Fi, because you can't restore from a backup over a cellular Internet connection. The time it takes to restore from a backup depends on the size of your backup and the speed of your Wi-Fi network.

Here's what to do if you can't connect to a Wi-Fi network on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you still need help, find out what to do based on your issue or the alert message that you see.

If you receive an error while restoring from an iCloud Backup

If you’ve already attempted to restore your device, and you’ve received an error, you’ll want to do the following:

  1. Erase the device and set it up as new.
  2. Check your software version and confirm that it’s up to date.
  3. Confirm that you’re connected to WiFi.
  4. Erase the device and try to restore from your iCloud backup again.
  5. If you still need help, contact Apple Support.

I forgot to mention that

  • I was indeed already on the latest iOS version, both the backup that was created and the phone were running iOS 12.4 which was the latest version on the day this happened.
  • I was indeed connected to a stable wi-fi connection (200 mbps) and I even went to McDonalds to try out their wi-fi connection (maybe mine was unstable or something), I even went to use my sister's wi-fi but ran into the same error every time
  • I have erased the device about a 4 times already and that too doesn't solve the problem
  • I'm contacting Apple on a daily basis here, it's become my primary occupation
