Why I try to sign in, first the password space disappears, then a message comes up saying the user name or password was incorrect. Try again.
The user name is not incorrect and the place to enter the password disappeared before I could enter anything.
What's going on?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
