If I copy the applications folder, will office 2010 be functional on the new laptop?

I tried to used time machine, however I ended up manually copying folders from the user folder. If I copy the applications folder, will office 2010 be functional on the new laptop? I manually copied since the user name was different.

Hello,

While copying an application from one Mac to another can work for certain applications and not for others. Microsoft Office also installs files in other locations such as ~/Library/Application\ Support. It would be nearly impossible to successfully clone all of these files. It is best to use the original install medium to install applications onto your new Mac. It is worth mentioning that with the release of macOS 10.15 Catalina this Fall Microsoft Office 2010 will no longer work on your Mac as it’s using older technology. At that point your only option would be to purchases Microsoft Office from the App Store.

You may want to disassociate Office from the old system first if you are able so you can free up a license since you are only allowed to have so many systems installed with a license key and sometimes this is tracked by Microsoft depending on the version.

Manually copying or even migrating using Migration/Setup Assistant doesn't seem to transfer the Microsoft license. Sometimes cloning the entire drive will keep the activation alive. The last couple of times I assisted someone after a drive upgrade, we were unable to reactive Office 2011 even when using the original product activation key. Also the online activation did not work due to "server" issues. I had downloaded the software direct from Microsoft for reinstall. I left it to the user to contact Microsoft or to purchase a newer version of Office to resolve the issue.
