Which version of GarageBand are you using? The older methods to speed up the tempo of an Audio File are no longer working in GarageBand 10 or later.

The easiest way to be able to adjust the tempo of an audio file is to convert it into a loop and to save it to the loop browser. When you add a loop to a project, the tempo will change according the the tempo of the song you are adding it too. (https://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.3/#/gbndd0009b98)

  • Import the audio file into a new project.
  • Set the tempo for the project to the original tempo of the song. Set the key of the project to the key of the song.
  • Trim the audio region with the song to an exact number of measures.
  • Then add the region to the Loop Library. (File > Add to Loop Library)
  • Remove the region with the audio file from the track.
  • Add the region back from the Loop Browser.
  • Change the tempo of the project to the tempo you want.

It is important to add the audio file to the Loop Library with the original tempo of the song. This way the tempo will be correctly adjusted, when you add the song to project with a different tempo.

And it is essential to trim the audio regions to an exact number of measures, or you can only save it as a one-shot loop, that cannot automatically adjust to the tempo of a project. You need a "Loop", not a 2one-shot" loop.
