It played yesterday. Today I rebooted.
Itunes crashes on opening. I tried different songs, different playlists.

Try holding down option+command as you launch iTunes to open it in safe mode. Sometimes that will fix a launch issue and allow iTunes to open normally thereafter. Failing that reinstall. See iTunes for Mac installers - Apple Community for download links.
