If you go to the health app, there is an activity category and it shows you how far you’ve walked with your phone. when you use it to log your steps you could hold your phone or have it in a pocket or possibly bag.

Yes. You can use the app "Health". You need to open the app and add Distance that you will find under the "Data" tab.
