CP2030 printer no longer supported

I have a friend with a Macbook Pro running Mojave and a Mitsubishi CP3020DA dye sublimation printer. He has only printed around 60 photos because, when he upgraded his Mac OS, the printer was no longer supported and there are no newer drivers. He is unwilling to simply change printers because it is basically as good as new and he has around £600 of media for it!!

I was able to get it working on an old Windows PC but he edits all his photos on his Mac with Photoshop that he owns for Mac OS only!

Is there any way to set up a simple print server, preferably using his old PC, so he can print from his Mac through the PC? Or should I try to teach him how to use a virtual machine with an older, supported Mac OS? (10.5/10.6 is the last supported Mac OS)

I am looking for the cheapest, simplest solution for him. between his camera gear, printer/media and Mac, he is not willing or able to spend much more!!!

I have checked Gutenrpint for Mac and they have no Mitsubishi printer support for the Mac either. That means no drivers for this printer on Mojave.

So, plan B is to put the PDF content that your friend wants to print on the Dye Sub into the Public folder in his home directory, and share that folder with his Windows machine over SMB. On Windows, print those PDF to the Dye Sub from the shared Mac Public folder.

Set up filesharing on Mac

Connect your Mac to shared computers and servers

HI there RABIT23,

I wouldn't recommend the use of a virtual machine, as it will slow down the host computer and you friend would most probably have to use an older and out-of-date version of Photoshop if the last supported version is OS X 10.6.

Depending on the version of Windows you are running on this old PC, it should be relatively easy to simply share the printer over the printer over the network, although this may require the drivers on behalf of the Mac.

Another option, as you said your self, would be to enable the Windows machine as a remote print server.

Make sure to check out the links to howtogeek and print manager.

Hope this helps. : )

Thank you for the reply. However, connecting to a shared printer in this way still requires the installation of a printer driver, does it not? That is the only reason he can't connect the printer directly to his Mac. I am hoping to find a solution that would allow the Mac to forward the raw print job from Photoshop CS6 to the windows PC and have that PC communicate with the printer. If you know a way to do this, that would be perfect.
