I got a new to me mid 2012 MacBook Pro. It has high Sierra on it. I wanted to upgrade to Mojave. Started the download. Three hours later it still said it had 17 hours to go. Tried again. This time it said 72 hours to go! I decided to do a factory reset and reinstall high Sierra. Doing that now and it says it has 40 hours to go. What the heck is going on? I have never had an issue downloading an OS X to my 2010 iMac.
Worst case is maybe you'll need to set up a USB installer. But you'll need a Mac with a working operating system first.

It’s not the fastest internet in the world but I’ve never seen this happen. It’s factory resetting right now. It’s a slow go. Hoping I can get high sierra back on there. I’ll let it run through the night.
If you've can connect to the internet using an ethernet connection, that's usually the most reliable way.
Tried that, same thing.
OK - not sure what to say now. I take it your internet access is normally fast enough? I guess sometimes it's slow on the server side.
I have an iMac. I’ll try and figure out how to do that. Right now I have the spinning globe and it says 24:00 till complete. So frustrated.
