preparing to erase a disk

Stupid question time.

My old mini is not performing well. I want to erase the disk and start over. I am assuming that my files in the cloud will still be there when I am done (photos, documents, music, etc.).

I would appreciate somebody telling me if I am correct, and, if there are traps waiting for me about my files that may not be obvious.

Erasing the disk shouldn't affect any files you have in iCloud. But you should also make a complete backup before you start on an external disk. It can be either Time Machine or a clone. You can use a cloning software like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopy Cloner.
