old accounts

I have an old itunes account that I can't remember the password for. When I try to recover the password, Apple informs me that it isn't an apple id. The majority of my purchased music is under this account, and I cannot transfer these songs that I have purchased to a new phone. How can I recover a password for an unrecognized apple id?
