What can I do? My iPad has stopped allowing me to answer text messages. The text comes through but when I click to read and answer it, the iPad goes black and then brings up the homepage.

Then let's reboot your iPad. Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time (keep holding past the swipe to power off) until you see the Apple Logo, then let go.
Force close the message app. Double tap your home button to bring up the app switcher. Slide the message app and any other app you haven't closed which you don't need immediate access to. Then tap your home button once to go back to your home screen. See if you can respond when you sign back in.
How much free memory do you have available on this iPad?
Go to Settings > General > iPad Memory
It lets me respond but then goes straight back to black and then home page.
No it still does it sometimes.
