Trackpad charging?
How do I know if my trackpad is actually charging, and WHY is the USB cable so loose?

Enable the menu icon in Bluetooth system preference. Then you can click on the Bluetooth icon and move the cursor over the trackpad selection to see the charging state,
You can also see the charging state at the bottom of Trackpad system preference.
