Is there no solution to adding a new iCloud email address to an existing Apple ID?

I have been using an old email (not an apple email address) for my iTunes for 12 years now. This email is no longer 'live'. I created a new iCloud email address and have tried to add this to my current Apple ID account (Contactable at > add new email) which does not work: message "This email address is not available. Choose a different address." When I try to Change Apple ID it also does not work: message: "This email address is not available. Choose a different address." All I need is a current email, a @icloud.com email address on my Apple ID, iCloud and iTunes account. Please can anyone advise?

By creating a new iCloud email address, you have created a new Apple ID. You can't merge Apple IDs.

Why don't you have access to the existing iCloud.com email address on the account ? iCloud.com email addresses are tied to the account that they were created on.
