Today when I went to my computer it had black screen with circle and line through it
I went to recovery mode and disk utility but the hard drive did not show up
what does this mean
is it possible for the data to be recovered in this state?

Your hard drive may have failed. If you don't have a backup, you can't copy the data off the hard drive if you can't access it.
