Why can’t I play music on my phone that I downloaded from digitizing LPs and CDs without getting a subscription to Apple Music??

I’ve been listening to music that I have in iTunes for years as well. I have an iPod Classic, and had no problems before the latest s/w update, and now the Classic is no longer supported.. But that’s another issue.
i just got wireless headphones. I’m trying to play music from my iPhone. However, 80% of the time I try to play a song, I’m switched to an Apple Music page, where I can’t play the song unless I subscribe to Apple Music. There’s no other option. I’m not going to pay for that when I have 8000 record albums (vinyl) that I’ve been converting to MP3 and put into iTunes!
I’ve been listening to music ripped from my CDs for years, synch’d over to the device from iTunes. What has been tried here, and what happened?
