File Recovery from TimeMachine

When I try to recover a file from my Time Capsule, I can locate it, view it with Quick Look but when I try and retrieve it, I get the following message :

The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -1407).

I get this same message if I try and recover a backup from a simple USB drive too.

I am running Mojave 10.14.6 and did a firmware upgrade on my Time Capsule within the last week, so it is at version 7.9.1.

Any help much appreciated.

The particular file I need (and can read in Quick Look) is a Numbers file.

Ok. that should be easy to recover.

The original backup was created under an earlier version of the O/S.

Does that mean you have continued backups after update to Mojave using the same Time Machine backup?

If you have not used it in mojave you must inherit it first.

Time Capsule shows as 'disconnected'.

That appears to be more to do with the sparsebundle not being readable. And I would suspect permissions issues.. since it is not allowing you to save the file or recover it.

Permissions got some big upgrades in later Mac OS and it does cause issues with accessing older files in a backup.

Apple removed the main permissions tools from disk utility which makes life that much harder.. there is a trick.

This is a bit complicated.

There is a permissions fix in the old airport utility where you can add guest access.

Your first problem is to run 5.6.1 airport utility launcher.. you need older Mac OS.. early Lion.. or special script from internet I cannot post URL but just google the text in bold.. still works even for mojave.. although it was not so straight forward. Any windows computer you can use.. or bootcamp partition on a Mac you can use the windows version of the airport utility.

If you go to the Disks tab, File Sharing.. by default Airport Disk Guest Access is Not Allowed.. change it to Read and Write.. and click update. Very fast.. takes just a few seconds to run through the disk and open up access. It might offer one easy way out of your problem.. !!

If this is the only source of your file.. then of course I would recommend you backup the TC before you do it.. there is archive function in the airport utility so you can save the current backup. But this has worked whenever I have needed it.

Many thanks again for the prompt replies and suggestions. To clarify one of my earlier responses, yes the base backup files was created under an earlier version of the O/S and Time Machine has continued to add to it as I have upgraded my system.

Since our last discussion and following on from your first response, and using Finder to connect to the Time Capsule, I have found that I can retrieve various file types, including numbers files, from the same period in history, without an issue. The key file still generates that error code however.

BUT... (and I did this by mistake) ... if I do a retrieve on the entire folder that contains the file of interest, then the whole thing seems to work OK.

I will continue to look into this and if I find anything further offering any insight, I will let you know.

Best wishes David

I presume the backup belongs to the Computer and you are using your normal admin level login.

I also presume you are trying to recover directly via Time Machine window.

It is hard to say since you have not given us info about the type of file.. eg System files are usually NOT able to be recovered easily.. so is it a user file or something from the system?

Have you tried just opening the file in the backup via Finder?

Firmware upgrade should not really matter. Mojave can be an issue especially if you started the backup under earlier OS.

Give us a bit more info on the type of file you want to recover.

There is one good workaround if you have the time..

Recover the entire backup to a USB drive. Assuming this is a not over large laptop drive.. it is not that difficult.

Boot to recovery and run setup assistant. Pick a date when the backup of the desired file is known.

Restore to USB drive.. be careful.. you don't want to overwrite your main internal drive.

Once you have a full working copy of the drive at the point where you want to recover.. you can select the file/s directly and just copy and paste.

Many thanks for the speedy reply. Here are some further details as you requested.

Yes the backup is associated with the same computer that I am trying to retrieve the files to.

The original backup was created under an earlier version of the O/S.

The particular file I need (and can read in Quick Look) is a Numbers file.

I will try opening the backup file in Finder as you suggest.

Thanks again, David

Thanks.. it should be fine then.. you can recover the whole folder and extract your file from there.

I am very unimpressed with Time Machine now.. and strongly recommend to people that the time has come for people to invest in a 3rd party backup like Carbon Copy Cloner.

I do think the issue is still permissions if that file was backed up during an earlier OS epoch.. like last year.. since Apple has taken to annual OS releases.
