on the upper right corner of the screen, my batt level indicator is now orange, it used to be green, what does this indicate?

Technically it’s yellow, but that means it’s in low power mode. It can be turned off

When Low Power Mode is on, the battery in the status bar will be yellow. You'll seeand the battery percentage. After you charge your iPhone to 80% or higher, Low Power Mode automatically turns off.
