Can you charge the iPhone XR overnight safely? Will it damage the life of the battery?

Yes, no. The iPhone will only charge as needed, and it will not damage the battery to be connected overnight. I do mine every night before I go to bed. Connected to wi-fi and power, it will automatically backup to iCloud if you have it configured that way.
