Put your iPhone in Ring/Silent mode
When your iPhone is set to ring, ringtones, alerts, and sounds play through your iPhone speakers.
When your iPhone is set to silent, you won't hear ringtones or alerts, but other sounds will play through your iPhone speakers and your iPhone will vibrate.
These settings affect only your iPhone speaker. If you use a headset, sounds play through your headset, even if your iPhone is on silent.
Ring mode
To put your iPhone in Ring mode, move the switch so that orange isn't showing.
Silent mode

The problem is solved. On the iPhone XR there is only a volume up button and a volume down button omg the left hand side. I found by accident that if I use volume down button the phone goes into mute mode. if I hold down the volume up button it comes out of mute.
That is very cool but what would be just as cool is fi Apple put out a manual to tell me this
You can use the mute switch on the side of the phone:

Note that any alarms you've set or calls from people in Favorites will still ring through.
You can also use Do Not Disturb:

You have a really strange XR. My XR has the two volume buttons, and above them the Mute switch, as shown in the images already posted. Do you have an ill-fitting case that is covering the mute switch, perhaps? Or do you have a counterfeit XR?
I tried holding the Volume Down button. When it reached the bottom it did not go to Mute; it just showed one dot. So I suspect it isn't an iPhone.
Note that iPads do not have a Mute switch. You silence them by holding the Volume Down button until the display says Mute.
Use the mute switch on the left side just above the volume buttons. If it shows red, it is muted.

There is also the silent switvh button over the volume up button
Nope. There is a switch there. If there isn't, then it's not an iPhone.
There is a switch on the iPad, but by default, it's used for the rotation lock. That can be changed in settings... or at least it could, the last time I checked.
My fifth generation iPad has no switch.
That ended after the iPad 4, quite aways back.
Ahhh. ok. Thanks. Been a while since I held a new one in my hands.
