Regarding use with Safari, see the following from their support site https://solokeys.com/pages/faq

Can I use Solo with Safari?

Yes, since Safari 12.1 you can enable Web Authentication in Develop > Experimental Features. It will be fully available in MacOS Catalina.

Regarding FileVault and/or firewall use, I strongly recommend FileVault as it will protect your data from someone accessing the data on your Mac if your Mac is lost or stolen; but the Solo keys have nothing to do with either FileVault or firewalls. It protects your accounts on websites such as Google, Facebook and others that support its use; i.e., they make it more difficult for someone to gain access to your account at one of those online sites.
