Mac Pro 5,1 with Mojave 10.14.6 AirPlay Screen Mirror to Apple TV 4K

I have an older Mac Pro 5,1 that I upgraded with a Radeon RX 580 running Mojave 10.14.6. I see the mirroring options in the menu bar, it shows my "living room" Apple TV, I can select it, the icon is blue, but nothing shows on the living room screen (the output device is a newer 1080p ViewSonic projector). The output is black or blank. When I hit the menu button on the remote, it returns me to the ATV home screen. What am I doing wrong?

It is not normally possible to use AirPlay on the old MacPro5,1 models to mirror your screen.

This is because the Xeon CPU chips used in the old MacPro models do not include an Intel feature called 'Quick Sync Video'. See - https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/architecture-and-technology/quick-sync-video/quick-sync-video-general.html

This sadly is one of the very few things that the old Mac Pro cannot do or be upgraded to do. (It can do Continuity and Handoff if you upgrade the WiFi and Bluetooth cards.)

The nearest solution is to use software instead of hardware to do this. Programs like this https://www.airsquirrels.com/airparrot/ can do AirPlay screen mirroring in software. It might prove a bit sluggish depending on what you are doing.
