Airpods will not re connect

after reading previous forums I disconnected my AirPods (generation 1) from my iPhone due to one not connecting. now I am having trouble reconnecting them. I cannot get an amber light to flash after holding the button down for 30s and more. If anyone could help, I’d be hugely grateful.
